Understanding Actuated Valves

Before the advent of actuation technology, industrial valves were operated manually. This often involved physically turning a wheel or handle to open or close the valve, which controlled the flow of fluids. The manual operation was labor-intensive and less precise. It posed challenges in terms of efficiency, especially in large-scale industrial environments or in situations dealing with hazardous materials. The development of actuated valves marked a significant advancement in industrial technology. Actuators, powered by electric, pneumatic, or hydraulic systems, allowed for remote or automated valve operation. This shift not only improved operational efficiency but also enhanced safety by reducing the need for direct human interaction, especially in handling hazardous materials.

Choosing the Right Valve for Your Process

Selecting the appropriate valve depends on several factors:

Nature of the Fluid: Consider the chemical properties of the fluid. Corrosive or abrasive materials require valves with resistant linings like glass or PTFE.
Process Requirements: Evaluate the precision needed in flow control.
Operating Environment: Factor in the environment where the valve will be used, including temperature and pressure conditions.

Selecting Dependable Actuators

The actuator is a critical component of an actuated valve. It’s essential to choose an actuator based on the valve type and the specific needs of your process:

Electric Actuators:

    • Best for precision control.
    • Suitable for situations where electrical power is readily available.
    • They offer accurate control and are suitable for a variety of environments.

Hydraulic Actuators:

  • Suitable for high-force applications and heavy-duty use.
  • Capable of exerting significant force and require hydraulic fluid.
  • Ideal for heavy industrial applications.

Pneumatic Actuators:

  • Ideal for rapid response applications.
  • Best used in environments where compressed air is accessible.
  • They are fast, reliable, and often used in industrial settings.

Air Torque Actuators:

  • Used for applications requiring quick and efficient rotational movement.
  • Best for situations needing high torque with a compact design.
  • They provide high torque in a compact form and rely on air pressure for movement.

Compact Actuators:

  • Ideal for limited space applications where a smaller footprint is essential.
  • They offer a space-saving design and are efficient in environments with space constraints.

Quarter Turn Actuators:

  • Used for operations requiring 90-degree movement, like ball or butterfly valves.
  • Ideal for quick open/close applications.
  • Can be adapted for various power sources and are common in flow control applications.

KDV has successfully completed a series of projects involving advanced actuating valves. Among these achievements is the Glass Lined ANSI 150 Pneumatically Actuated Weir Type Diaphragm Valve, with a SED actuator and positioner, a hallmark of KDV Flow’s ingenuity.

In addition, our portfolio also includes the delivery of Rotary Electric Actuation and a Full Stainless Tri Clamp Diaphragm Valve, which was integrated with our P-Series Actuator and a Rotork TMP3000 positioner.

The Rotary Electric Actuation orders comprised Rubber Lined Weir Type Valves, meticulously drilled to PN10/16 standards and featuring our direct mount ISO bonnet. The innovative non-rising stem design of these  valves effectively obviated the necessity for custom brackets and stand-offs
